Tools for healthcare professionals to tackle pharmaceutical pollution
Many medicines such as Antibiotics, cytostatics, synthetic hormones, anti-inflammatory drugs, and sedatives, can have harmful effects if they are excreted into wastewater as active substances in the faeces and urine of patients. They can cause behavioural, physiological, and histological issues to animals and other exposed organisms and drive the development of antimicrobial resistance.Since it remains to be a global problem, the healthcare sector has an important role to reduce pharmaceutical pollution by adopting simple practices, educating patients, and engaging with each other.
Therefore, the CleanMed Europe Organisation, a leading sustainable healthcare conference in Europe is holding a virtual event which will be having more than 27 sessions that will be delivered by more than 60 experts one of these sessions is about our topic “Tools for Healthcare Professionals to tackle Pharmaceutical Pollution”).
In this session, we will:
- Raise awareness about the healthcare sector’s contribution to pharmaceutical pollution.
- Present practices that healthcare professionals, especially doctors, can take to reduce pharmaceutical emissions and waste.

Our modern world has to deal with sustainability issues in face of climate change. It is fundamentally important that sustainability needs to be a part of our medical education. To raise awareness of this severe situation, one has to learn the dependence of human health on its environmental surroundings. Hence, IPSF is paying more attention towards finding tools and solutions for healthcare professionals to tackle pharmaceutical pollution for using the insights to develop future campaigns about it.
